Eymir

When Eymir Lake was transferred to ODTÜ along with the main campus in the early 1960s, it was a lake in the middle of a barren landscape with not a single tree around it. After the lake and its surrounding land were transferred to the administration of ODTÜ, the university, starting from the 1960s, together with its students, workers, academics, and the people of Ankara, planted trees on this land, took care of it, and brought life to it. The reforestation efforts in this region were awarded the world-renowned Aga Han Award for Architecture in 1995. However, during those same years, various interest groups realized that they could profit from the lake and its now forested, lush surroundings, and therefore, unfounded claims began to emerge, such as ODTÜ not taking good care of the lake and that the lake was closed to the public. These debates have increased significantly in recent years. These days, some politicians are arguing that this lake should be taken away from ODTÜ, citing newly enacted laws. At the same time, skyscrapers are rising around the lake, and housing developments are proceeding at full speed.
The documentary “Eymir” tells the story of how Lake Eymir was revitalized by human intervention and examines the recent pressures of construction by raising questions.
